Toerversie Amstel Gold Race verplaatst naar zaterdag 11 september

De organisatie van de Amstel Gold Race heeft besloten de Toerversie van de Amstel Gold Race, waar jaarlijks 15.000 wielerliefhebbers aan deelnemen, te verplaatsen naar zaterdag 11 september 2021. De profversie van de Amstel Gold Race en Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition staan nog wel gepland op zondag 18 april 2021.
 

Jaarlijks organiseert de Amstel Gold Race een wielerweekend waarbij zowel de amateurs op zaterdag als de profs op zondag een mooie tocht door het Limburgse landschap maken. “Helaas moeten we nu, twee maanden voor de Amstel Gold Race van 2021, opnieuw concluderen dat een wielertoertocht waarbij 15.000 deelnemers (amateurs) aan de start verschijnen niet realistisch is in april. Dat is ontzettend jammer, want natuurlijk organiseren we de toerversie het liefst gelijktijdig met de profversie en maken we er een fantastisch wielerfeest van. Veiligheid gaat boven alles en de huidige situatie laat het op dit moment nog niet toe om een evenement van deze omvang te organiseren. De start van het wereldwijde vaccinatieprogramma geeft ons hoop dat we de toerversie later dit jaar op een veilige manier kunnen organiseren. Om die reden hebben we besloten de toerversie te plaatsen naar zaterdag 11 september”, aldus Leo van Vliet, koersdirecteur Amstel Gold Race.

Amstel Gold Race en Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition

De voorbereidingen voor de profversie van de Amstel Gold Race en Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition op zondag 18 april zijn nog steeds in volle gang. “We zijn in goed gesprek met diverse overheids- en veiligheidsinstanties. De plannen liggen klaar en als organisatie zijn wij in staat om snel te kunnen schakelen waar nodig. In tegenstelling tot een grote toertocht zijn onze wedstrijden beter te reguleren, zeker ook omdat wielerteams al maanden strikt leven volgens de door de UCI opgestelde COVID-19 protocollen. We zijn van mening dat topsportwedstrijden als de Amstel Gold Race, die als WorldTour wedstrijd onder het hoogste internationale niveau valt, onder strikte voorwaarden op een veilige manier georganiseerd kunnen worden. Afgelopen jaar is dit, met name in België, meermaals bewezen”, aldus Van Vliet.
 

Deelnemers die reeds ingeschreven stonden voor de toerversie in april behouden hun toegangsbewijs voor de editie op 11 september en worden hierover geïnformeerd. Verdere informatie voor deelnemers is hier te vinden.

Tour Ride Amstel Gold Race for amateurs rescheduled to Saturday 11 September 2021

Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition elite races will still take place on 18 April 2021

The organization of the Amstel Gold Race has decided to reschedule the Tour Ride of the Amstel Gold Race, with 15.000 participants, to Saturday 11 September 2021. The elite races of the Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition are still scheduled for Sunday 18 April 2021.
 

Every year, the Amstel Gold Race organises a cycling weekend for both amateurs on Saturday and professionals on Sunday. “Unfortunately, two months before the Amstel Gold Race 2021, we have to conclude again that a cycling tour ride with 15,000 participants (amateurs) is not feasible in April due to the current COVID-19 circumstances. This is extremely unfortunate, of course we prefer to organise the tour ride simultaneously with the professional race. Safety always comes first, which is why we have decided to postpone the tour ride until Saturday, 11 September. The start of the worldwide vaccination programme gives us hope that we will be able to organise the tour ride safely later this year”, says Leo van Vliet, Race Director Amstel Gold Race.
 

Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition

Preparations for the Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition on Sunday 18 April are still in full swing. “We are working closely with local governments and safety authorities to organise the elite races in a safe way. The plans are ready and as an organisation we can adjust quickly if necessary. In contrary to the amateur tour ride, the professional races are easier to regulate, especially since cycling teams have been living strictly by the UCI's COVID-19 protocols for months. We believe that top-class sporting events such as the Amstel Gold Race, with its WorldTour status, can be organised safely under strict conditions. Last year this was proven several times, especially in Belgium”, said Van Vliet.

Participants who were already registered for the tour version in April will keep their tickets for the edition on 11 September. They will be informed about this.
