Amstel Gold Race gaat door op zondag 18 april

Valkenburg, 8 maart – De Amstel Gold Race en Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, onderdeel van de UCI WorldTour en UCI Women’s WorldTour, worden zondag 18 april verreden op een parcours door de gemeenten Valkenburg aan de Geul, Maastricht en Eijsden-Margraten. De ronde van circa 17 kilometer wordt hermetisch afgesloten voor dagtoeristen en wielerpubliek. De organisatie roept iedereen op om de Amstel Gold Race thuis te kijken en niet naar Limburg af te reizen. Via NOS is de race de hele dag online en op televisie thuis te volgen.
 

“Wij zijn ontzettend blij met het bericht van de overheden dat de Amstel Gold Race en de Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition zondag 18 april verreden mogen worden. Na de annulering in oktober 2020 hebben wij niet stilgezeten. We zijn in gesprek gebleven met overheden en hebben de plannen tot in detail kunnen uitwerken. We zijn ons ervan bewust dat er richting zondag 18 april nog veel kan gebeuren, maar we danken de landelijke en regionale overheden voor hun steun in dit proces. Gezamenlijk kijken we nu vooral positief vooruit naar de dingen die wel mogelijk zijn”, aldus koersdirecteur Leo van Vliet.
 

Publiek niet toegestaan

De drie burgemeesters van de betreffende gemeenten hebben besloten dat de Amstel Gold Race op 18 april kan plaatsvinden, maar verbinden daar wel voorwaarden aan. Het volledige gebied rondom het parcours zal hermetisch worden afgesloten voor dagtoeristen en wielerpubliek. Ook aan het parcours wordt geen publiek toegestaan, dus voor mensen die in het gebied verblijven is het niet toegestaan om aan het parcours de wedstrijd te volgen. Door de gemeenten zal daar strikt op worden gehandhaafd. De organisatie zal er voor zorgen dat het gebied voor bewoners en ondernemers bereikbaar blijft.

Burgemeester Jan Schrijen van Valkenburg aan de Geul licht het besluit om de Amstel Gold Race door te laten gaan toe: “In oktober was een noodverordening van kracht en gold dus een andere regelgeving. Met de Tijdelijke Wet Maatregelen Covid-19 zijn de lokale burgemeesters bevoegd. De geldende ministeriële regeling maakt het doorgaan van de wedstrijden dit jaar wel mogelijk. Het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport heeft hiermee ingestemd. De Amstel Gold Race valt onder de topsportregeling en kan daarom als topsportwedstrijd georganiseerd worden. Dit betekent wel dat geen publiek wordt toegestaan en alle randactiviteiten zoals bijvoorbeeld de VIP tenten en de reclamekaravaan niet kunnen plaatsvinden. Voor ons is daarnaast van belang dat de bereikbaarheid van de kernen in het afgesloten gebied te allen tijde gewaarborgd is. De organisatie heeft nu meer tijd gehad om alles zorgvuldig voor te bereiden. Daarom vinden wij het verantwoord dat deze voorjaarsklassieker dit jaar weer in onze regio verreden kan worden. We hebben er alle vertrouwen in dat de organisatie er voor zal zorgen dat alles veilig zal verlopen en de wielerliefhebbers ‘thuis voor de buis’ kunnen genieten van een mooie wielerwedstrijd in het prachtige decor van de Limburgse heuvels.”

Ook UCI president David Lappartient heeft gereageerd op het goede nieuws: “Ik ben zeer verheugd dat de Amstel Gold Race en Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition doorgaan. Ik wil mijn dank uitspreken aan de Nederlandse overheid en de organisatie voor hun doorzettingsvermogen en het vinden van een oplossing middels dit 17 kilometer lange parcours. Het is van groot belang dat wedstrijden op de Internationale wielerkalender en in het bijzonder de UCI WorldTour en UCI Women’s WorldTour plaatsvinden, uiteraard met passende maatregelen om de wedstrijden veilig te kunnen organiseren. Dit fantastische nieuws bevestigt dat onze sport in staat is om te denken in oplossingen, mede dankzij de medewerking van alle stakeholders ondanks de moeilijke omstandigheden gedurende deze pandemie. Ik spreek mijn felicitatie uit aan Leo van Vliet en het hele organisatieteam van de Amstel Gold Race.”

Omloop over 17 kilometer

De dames en heren rijden zondag 18 april respectievelijk 7 en 13 rondes van 17 kilometer met elke ronde de beklimming van de Geulhemmerberg, Bemelerberg en Cauberg. Alleen de laatste ronde bij de heren zal de Cauberg niet aangedaan worden. De Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition wordt in de ochtend verreden. Vanwege de geldende Covid-19 maatregelen is ervoor gekozen om niet te starten op het Vrijthof in Maastricht maar binnen afgesloten gebied op de top van de Cauberg. De start is omstreeks 08.30 uur en de finish rond 12.00 uur. De Amstel Gold Race start om 12.15 uur en de heren finishen naar verwachting om 17.45 uur.

Organisatie roept iedereen op om race thuis te volgen

“Om het gebied hermetisch af te sluiten voor publiek zetten we ongeveer 350 verkeersregelaars, beveiligers en medewerkers in. We vragen daarom ook iedereen de Amstel Gold Race dit jaar volledig thuis te volgen. De NOS zal er de hele dag bij zijn en zowel de heren als de dames live uitzenden, de thuisblijvende wielerliefhebber hoeft dus niets te missen. Laten we het zien als een lichtpunt in deze tijd en genieten van een hopelijk heel spannende koers. We moeten er echt met elkaar voor zorgen dat de race op een veilige manier kan plaatsvinden”, aldus Van Vliet.

Bewoners in het afgesloten gebied worden de komende weken nader geïnformeerd en kunnen uiteraard de hele dag hun woning bereiken. Ook de gesprekken met de bedrijven en verblijfaccommodaties in het gebied worden gevoerd of staan gepland.
 

Uitzending NOS

De Amstel Gold Race wordt dit jaar extra lang live uitgezonden. Zondag 18 april 2021 zal zowel de dames- als de herenkoers vanaf 08.30 tot 18.00 uur op NOS.nl en NPO1 te volgen zijn.
 

Toerversie Amstel Gold Race

Eerder had de organisatie al besloten de Toerversie Amstel Gold Race met 15.000 deelnemers te verplaatsen naar zaterdag 11 september. Reeds ingeschreven deelnemers hebben bericht gekregen en kunnen hun inschrijving doorschuiven naar 11 september. Ook zijn er nog enkele startbewijzen beschikbaar. Amstel Gold Race to return on Sunday April 18th

Valkenburg, March 8^th – This year’s Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, part of the UCI WorldTour and the Women’s WorldTour, will take place on Sunday April 18^th, on a modified circuit through the municipalities of Valkenburg aan de Geul, Maastricht and Eijsden-Margraten. The circuit, of approximately 17 kilometres, will be hermetically closed to day tourists and public. The organisation asks everyone to watch the race from home and not to travel to Limburg. 
 

Leo van Vliet, Race Director Amstel Gold Race: “We are very happy with the message from the authorities that the Amstel Gold Race and the Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition can be held on the April 18th. Since the cancellation in October 2020, we have continued to talk to the authorities and have been able to work out the plans in detail. We are aware that a lot can still happen towards 18th April, but we thank the national and regional authorities for their support in this process.”
 

Public not allowed

The three mayors of the municipalities have decided that the Amstel Gold Race can take place on April 18th, but they have attached conditions to it. The entire area around the circuit will be hermetically closed to day tourists and cycling public. No spectators are allowed on the circuit either.  This will be strictly enforced by the municipalities. The organisation will ensure that the area remains accessible for residents and businesses.

Mayor Jan Schrijen of Valkenburg aan de Geul explains the decision to allow the organization to organize the Amstel Gold Race: "In October there was an emergency order and therefore other rules. With the temporary Covid-19 law the local mayors got authorized for these decisions. The current ministerial regulation makes it possible for the races to go ahead this year. The ministry of Health, Wellbeing and Sports has also granted permission. The Amstel Gold Race is regarded as a top-class sporting event and for that reason it can be organised this year. However, this means that no public is allowed and that all peripheral activities such as the VIP tents and the advertising caravan cannot take place. It is also important to us that the accessibility of all villages in the closed area is guaranteed at all times. The organisation has now had more time to prepare everything carefully. This is why we think it is responsible for the Amstel Gold Race to be held in our region again this year. We are confident that the organization will ensure that everything will run safely and the cycling fans can enjoy a beautiful cycling race in front of their television."
 

UCI President David Lappartient also declared: "On behalf of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), I would like to say how pleased we are that the Amstel Gold Race and the Amstel Gold Race Ladies are being maintained this year, after their cancellation in 2020. I would like to thank the competent Dutch authorities for their support and for finding a solution with this 17 km circuit. It is very important that the races on our UCI International Road Calendar, and in particular the UCI WorldTour and the UCI Women's WorldTour, take place, with of course all the adaptations made necessary by the current pandemic context. This excellent news confirms that our sport knows how to find solutions, thanks to the collaboration of all its stakeholders, despite the difficult circumstances of the health crisis. Congratulations to Leo van Vliet and the entire organization team of the men’s and women’s Amstel Gold Race!"
 

17-kilometre circuit

On Sunday 18the April, the elite women and men will be riding 7 and 13 laps of 17 kilometres respectively, with each lap climbing the Geulhemmerberg, the Bemelerberg and the Cauberg. The final circuit of the men’s race will omit the Cauberg. The Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition will be held in the morning, with the start at approximately 8.30 a.m. and the finish around noon. The men’s Amstel Gold Race starts at 12.15 pm and is expected to finish at around 5.45 pm. Because of the current Covid-19 measures the start will not take place on the Vrijthof square in Maastricht, but within a closed area at the top of the Cauberg.
 

Organisation calls on everyone to follow race at home

"In order to close off the area hermetically to the public, we will deploy approximately 350 traffic controllers, security guards and staff. We therefore ask everyone to watch the Amstel Gold Race at home this year. The NOS will be there all day and will broadcast both the men's and women's races live, so the cycling fan who stays at home won't have to miss a thing. I hope that everyone can enjoy an exciting race. Together, we really have to make sure that the race can take place in a safe way”, says Van Vliet.

Residents in the closed off area will be informed further in the coming weeks and will of course be able to access their homes throughout the day.

Tour version Amstel Gold Race

Earlier, the organisation had already decided to move the Tour Version of the Amstel Gold Race with 15,000 participants to Saturday 11th September.
